Rainbows, Butterflies, and Other Happy Stuff

2012 has already been a big year for us. Ben has started playing soccer for the first time, Ryan will be 30 in a little over 2 weeks, and my sister and brother in law, Krizia and Preston, are expecting their first baby in June. This month is Krizia's 29th birthday. Tomorrow to be exact. About a month ago, the boys asked her what kind of birthday cake she wanted. To them, the kind of cake you have dictates the kind of time you will have. Krizia answered them by saying that she wanted a rainbow cake, and the children automatically volunteered themselves (me) to make said rainbow cake. So after hours of scouring Pinterest (well hours looking at random crap and 5 minutes looking for a rainbow cake) I cake across this delightful picture and instructions from this blog.

After briefly reading over it and laughing my butt off at her caustic sense of humor, I figured I had enough knowledge to make the cake and began the process. It was kinda fun. A little messy, my hands are still covered in food coloring, but it was fun. I started with a white boxed cake mix because well, let's face it, I'm too lazy to make on from scratch. I'm pretty sure Betty Crocker has it down pact after all these years anyway, so I'll leave it to the professionals. Don't judge me... Kiki! And then I separated the mix into bowls and added the food coloring.

After I had already used all the cake mix I had, I realized that I forgot green. Oh well, green isn't that important anyway.  As it shows on the blog I got it from, you just put the cake mix in color by color. Pretty simple just pour one color on top of the other and then throw it in the oven.
I did a pretty awesome job pouring it in- if I do say so myself.
I noticed that pans weren't as full as they usually should be, but I just kinda ignored it because I had a lot going on at my house at the time. As I checked on them, I realized that they weren't exactly rising as they should and i just walked away and hoped for the best.

When they were fully cooked, I pulled them out of the oven and was slightly underwhelmed at fruits of my labor. It looked pretty cool, but the cake was lopsided and only about an inch thick in some places. It was only then that I went back and read the original post that  2 cake mixes were needed -an observation I had already made.
Flat like a pancake :(
Obviously, this cake will not do. I guess I will just mark this one off as the experimental one. Lucky for me, my trusty husband is off  to go get more stuff so I can make another one with 2 cakes mixes instead of one. Maybe this time I will even add green. Regardless of failed attempt, the members of my house hold enjoyed eating my mistake.

Yes, I know my kids are always naked. You don't need to point it out.

UPDATE!

I did finish making Krizia's cake according to the directions and it turned out really well. Sean was running around sick, so I didn't get to level it and perfect as much as I would have liked to, but it turned our looking fine and tasted great nonetheless.
